ROCK idol Jay Kay's warped stepdad has revealed how he helped turn a quiet schoolboy into the wild man of pop.
As blood streamed from the Jamiroquai star's nose after yet another bust-up this week, James Royal boasted how he "educated" young Jay on a Thailand holiday.
Royal was meant to look after Jay during the school summer break...but the boy, just 13, was left to wander alone through the backstreet bars of Phuket for SIX MONTHS.
Royal also told how he allowed Jay to lose his virginity to a bar girl called Toy—even letting them sleep in his flat.
The youngsters saw each other for weeks on end, and when Jay returned to Britain Toy, who was 17 but looked younger, discovered that she was pregnant. The father could have been any one of a number of men.
She had an abortion then, three months later, returned to James Royal's flat and hanged herself from the window-grille.
Royal told the News of the World: "Toy missed Jay and was broken-hearted. She said she couldn't afford to take on a baby and I certainly didn't want the responsibility. I paid for the abortion but she became depressed.
One night she let herself quietly into a place I used to rent. The next morning I saw her hanging over the bed. When I told Jay about Toy he was upset and has never spoken about her since."
Royal, now 59, had been manager and lover to Jay Kay's cabaret-singer mother Karen Kay and took on the role of unofficial stepdad to her son.
"We never married but we were as good as man and wife," he said. "I looked upon Jay, or Jason as he was then, as if he was my own son."
Quivering
In July 1983 Karen was breaking into TV. Although she and Royal split in 1981 and he moved to Thailand, the pair kept in touch—and that's when he agreed to look after Jay for the school hols while Karen worked in showbiz.
Almost from the day Jay set foot in the Far East, Royal gave him a free rein—even allowing him to take the wheel of a four-wheel-drive vehicle in off-road jaunts.
"I was busy with work or just having fun," smirked Royal. "There were so many women around and sex was easy.I decided it was better to let Jason hang out in places where I knew the staff and some of the girls.
"I knew he was sleeping with the girls because he brought them to hotels where we'd stay or to my flat. Like me, he was like a kid in a candy store.
"When I first took him into one of my favourite strip clubs, the girls picked him up and sat him on the bar. At first he sat there with a quivering lip. But after a few minutes and with all these bare breasts bouncing around inches from his face, he relaxed."
When Royal went to Bangkok on business, he'd take Jay with him. Again, the boy was left to wander on his own. Royal insisted: "I knew where he'd be and I'd have people watching out for him. Jay used to go out at around 9pm then we'd meet up by about midnight. He'd go to bars where he knew I'd drink, order a few beers and leave me to pick up the tab."
Though Jay was only meant to stay in Thailand for a few weeks he was still there in December 1983 when he was summoned home—and he hadn't been to classes in all that time.
He ended up at Oakham School, Leics, before turning to pop and becoming a multi-millionaire with hits such as Virtual Insanity.
Police are now investigating allegations of assault between Jay and a snapper named Alan Grisbrook after Tuesday night's premiere party for the new Star Wars film. Jay says he was headbutted after his new Bentley was dented. Grisbrook claims Jay hit him first and "there could have been a clash of heads."
In little over a year Jay Kay, now 33, has been involved in three public bust-ups. During one he screamed at photographers: "I'll ****ing kill you."
Naive
He has little to do with his old ‘stepdad' these days and told the News of the World: "I went to Thailand on holiday in 1983 and I do remember a girl called Toy. At the time I was too naive to understand what was going on, as any 13-year-old kid would be, but I never had sex with this girl.
"Me and my family have done nothing but try to distance ourselves from this man (Royal) for 19 years but, like a bad penny, he always turns up." Royal disagrees. "We grew apart," he said. "If anything, I think Jay's time in Thailand was an education.
"The rest is history."
